All too often people don’t realise exactly what they are covered for, or what to do in event of a claim until it is too late!
Velos insurance have compiled a list of the top items to check on your policy for this season:
1. - Is your Insurance valid for where you are?
It is important to look at the cruising area specified on your policy, does your policy cover where you want to go?
2. - Is the Value of your boat correct?
Have all those additions you added to your boat in the off season affected its value, double check that the full value of your boat is covered.
3. - Is your machinery covered?
Do you know the real extent to which you are covered for Machinery Damage?
4 - Check your maximum speed.
If your Maximum Designed Speed is more than 17 Knots, check that you have underwater gear cover, as some wordings may be a little confusing.
5 - Check your excess.
Do you know what your excesses are (the amount you will pay in the event of a claim)? Often people will only look at the premium and do not notice if it is lower than another because of the higher excess.
6. - Read the small print!
And finally, if paying by premium finance (i.e. monthly instalments), check for the hidden charges – if a high rate is charged for the finance the resulting cost can push the premium much higher than originally expected.
